If a specific page on a website does not load for some reason or if a link is not working, the visitor will see an error page with some generic message. The page will have nothing in common with the rest of the site, which may make the visitor leave the website. A potential solution in this case is a function offered by some web hosting service providers - the ability to set up your own custom-made error pages that will have exactly the same layout as your site and which can contain any images or text that you'd like dependent upon the particular error. There are four standard errors that could occur and they involve the following so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your world-wide web browser sends a bad request to the web server and it cannot be processed; 401, if you're supposed to log in to see some web page, but you haven't done this yet; 403, if you do not have an authorization to view a certain page; and 404, when a link which you have clicked leads to a file which does not exist. In all of these cases, visitors will be able to see your custom content rather than a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Website Hosting

You'll be able to set up custom error pages for all of your sites effortlessly if you use any of our Linux website hosting. This could be done from the Hosted Domains part of the Hepsia Control Panel, which comes with all accounts and once you go there, you could set your customized pages independently for any domain or subdomain. You have to upload the files to your account in advance and enter the links to them during the process. This function can be de-activated anytime and the options you will be able to choose from are a conventional page from our system or a default Apache web server page. Custom error pages can be set with an .htaccess file as well. The file should be put in the domain or subdomain folder and it should contain some system code and links to the pages. If you aren't tech-savvy, you may copy the whole content necessary for the file from our Help section.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Hosting

All Linux semi-dedicated hosting which we offer support customized error pages and it shall not take more than a few clicks from your Hepsia website hosting Control Panel to use this function. The option is included in the Hosted Domains section of your CP in which you will need to type in the links to the custom-made files through basic drop-down menus and a user-friendly interface. Of course, you need to upload them in your account before that. In case you don't need to use this feature at some point, you can disable it just as quickly and pick an Apache server page or a default page from our system to be viewable whenever your visitors encounter an error. If you prefer, you can also use an .htaccess file to activate the custom error pages. The file has to contain a specific line of code plus a link for each and every error type and you may find an example of the entire content for all four error types in our Help section.
